What key trends do you currently observe in the local eCommerce market, and how do you see them evolving in the next few years?
Currently, we observe several key trends in the local eCommerce market in the Republic of Serbia. One prominent trend is the increasing adoption of mobile commerce (m-commerce) due to the widespread use of smartphones and improved internet connectivity. This trend is expected to continue growing as more consumers prefer the convenience of shopping on their mobile devices. Additionally, there’s a noticeable rise in the popularity of online marketplaces, providing consumers with a wide range of products and sellers with expanded reach. Another significant trend is the growing demand for personalized shopping experiences, leading eCommerce businesses to invest in technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to tailor offerings to individual preferences. Moreover, we’re witnessing a notable rise in the adoption of fulfillment business models, including third-party logistics (3PL) services and dropshipping arrangements, enabling eCommerce businesses to streamline their operations and scale efficiently. Looking ahead, we anticipate further growth in these areas, along with increased integration of augmented reality and virtual reality technologies for enhanced customer engagement.
How does your organization perceive the role of eCommerce in contributing to the economic development of the local region?
Our organization recognizes the vital role that eCommerce plays in contributing to the economic development of the local region. By facilitating trade and expanding market access, eCommerce fosters entrepreneurship, stimulates job creation, and drives innovation.
Moreover, eCommerce enables small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to compete on a global scale, thereby fueling economic growth and fostering international trade relationships. As such, we view eCommerce as a powerful engine for economic development, particularly in emerging markets like Serbia, and the Balkans as well.

In terms of regional characteristics, the Balkan eCommerce market exhibits diverse payment preferences, multiple currencies, with cash on delivery remaining popular alongside increasing adoption of digital payment methods like credit cards, e-wallets, and online banking.
Logistics infrastructure varies across the region, with some areas experiencing challenges such as inadequate transportation networks and customs clearance processes. However, there’s a growing emphasis on improving logistics efficiency to meet the demands of eCommerce growth.
Customer behavior and shopping habits also vary, influenced by cultural factors and historical context. For instance, consumers in some Balkan countries prioritize personal interactions and prefer to shop at local stores, while others embrace online shopping for its convenience and variety.
How do you analyze and assess the competitive landscape in the eCommerce industry?

What rating from 1 to 10 do you give to the local logistic companies and their role in delivery efficiency and customer satisfaction? In the context of increased interest in cross-border sales, how well prepared are the logistics companies from your country?
Rating local logistic companies on a scale of 1 to 10 for their role in delivery efficiency and customer satisfaction would vary depending on specific regions and individual experiences.
However, overall, there has been significant improvement in recent years, with many logistics companies investing in infrastructure, technology, and service quality to meet the demands of eCommerce.
The aspiration for cross-border trade remains strong in the countries of the Ex-Yugoslav region, especially those that are not yet part of the EU. While concrete changes are yet to be seen in this regard, discussions have begun, and initiatives such as OpenBalkan have initiated processes in certain sectors. There is hope that such initiatives will pave the way for reducing cross-border barriers for eCommerce and trade in general.
Cross-border sales will spur further enhancements, prompting logistics providers to streamline international shipping processes and expand their global networks. While challenges remain, the logistics industry in the Balkans is adapting to the evolving eCommerce landscape.
