With eCommerce penetration still below 10% of total retail – compared to 15% in Western Europe or 30% in the UK, Bulgaria represents one of the most compelling growth opportunities in the region. The fundamentals are there: rising digital adoption, an increasingly connected consumer base, and a market ready to leapfrog traditional retail barriers.
The infrastructure advantage
Over the past five years, eMAG at a group level has invested over 5.3 billion lei in technology, logistics, and eCommerce infrastructure across the region. For Bulgarian entrepreneurs, this means access to fulfillment networks, payment solutions, and AI-powered tools without the burden of replicating these capabilities independently.
Through Fulfilment by eMAG, sellers can now operate across Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary from a single integration point.
Meeting Bulgarian consumers where they are
Bulgarian consumers, like their regional counterparts, come online for the same reasons: access to a wider product range, competitive prices, and convenience. But they also have distinct needs shaped by local purchasing power and shopping habits.
That’s why we’ve taken a deliberate approach to expanding value-added services in Bulgaria. Genius, our membership program, which launched in Bulgaria almost two years ago, has now been adopted widely across the region, contributing to a combined subscriber base of over 1.5 million in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. Last autumn, we introduced MyWallet in Bulgaria, giving the eligible customers access to flexible payment solutions that help them manage their budgets while shopping when they need to.
AI as the great equalizer
Perhaps the most exciting development is how artificial intelligence is leveling the playing field. In the fiscal year ending this March, eMAG at a group level invested over 163 million lei in AI development and implementation.
The impact is tangible: over 60% of products are now listed in less than 24 hours thanks to AI agents. For Bulgarian sellers, this means access to the same AI-powered tools as major players, at a fraction of the cost of developing them independently. Small and medium businesses can now compete on capability, not just scale.
The road ahead
The next leap in regional eCommerce won’t come from a single breakthrough. It will come from the convergence of technology, infrastructure, and the ability of entrepreneurs to operate seamlessly across borders.
Bulgaria is uniquely positioned to benefit from this shift. As entry barriers continue to fall and scaling becomes more accessible, Bulgarian businesses have an unprecedented opportunity to grow beyond their borders – and for regional players to bring more value to Bulgarian consumers.
The eCommerce sector in Southeast Europe is entering its next chapter. Bulgaria isn’t just part of that story – it may well be where the most exciting pages are written.
