S4AMZ is a specialised Amazon FBA agency founded in 2018, working with manufacturers and brand owners across European and US marketplaces. With over a decade of experience in eCommerce, CEO and Founder Milcho Vasilkoff shares his perspective on why Amazon remains one of the most direct and still underused routes for Balkan businesses to reach Western European consumers.

Amazon is a global platform. Why does it represent a specific opportunity for manufacturers in the Balkans?

The opportunity is structural. Amazon is the first destination for product searches in Germany, France, the UK, and across Western Europe. A consumer in Munich looking for a natural face cream does not always start on Google. They go directly to Amazon. That kind of access, historically, required building distribution networks, negotiating with retailers, and investing in brand awareness over many years. Amazon removes those barriers entirely. A producer from Bulgaria or Serbia with a quality product can, with the right positioning, be visible to millions of buyers across Europe within weeks. The logistics, payments, and customer service infrastructure is already in place through Amazon’s FBA programme. What is required is the knowledge of how to operate within it, and that is precisely where we come in.

Where do you typically recommend starting, and why?

Germany, without exception in virtually every case we have worked on. It is the largest Amazon marketplace in Europe, with a consumer base that actively values quality, transparency, and product provenance. For natural or organic products, Germany is particularly receptive. There is genuine demand for well-formulated, sustainably packaged goods. Once a product has established its performance in Germany, we expand progressively: typically to France, the Benelux countries, and then the United Kingdom. The UK has its own regulatory specificities post-Brexit, but these are manageable, and the market remains strong. Italy and Spain follow, depending on the product category.

Does the same product simply get listed across multiple markets, or is there more to it?

Localisation is, in many ways, the determining factor. The same product that performs well in Germany will often require a fundamentally different visual identity and messaging to succeed in France or Italy. Take natural cosmetics as an example. German consumers respond to minimalist design, muted earth tones, recyclable materials, and clear certifications. The same product positioned for the French market needs a different aesthetic entirely: more vivid, more premium in its visual language, with a different emphasis in the copy. Italian and Spanish consumers have their own expectations. We analyse each market before recommending an entry strategy, and we adapt listings, imagery, and A+ content accordingly. It is not optional. It is the difference between a product that sells and one that does not.

What does S4AMZ actually do for a client? What is the scope of work?

We cover the full cycle. Account setup and brand registry, listing creation and copywriting, keyword research and SEO optimisation, professional product photography briefs and A+ content, PPC advertising strategy and campaign management, and ongoing account management. Clients do not need to learn Amazon’s internal systems or stay current with its constant platform changes. That is our job. We also hold Amazon Gold Agency Partner status, which gives us early access to new programmes and features as they become available. Our typical client is a manufacturer who produces their own goods and wants to build a direct sales channel on Amazon under their own brand. Many of them come to us after seeing traders and resellers successfully selling products they themselves manufacture, and deciding it is time to capture that value directly.

Which product categories from the Balkans are particularly well-suited to Amazon in Western Europe?

There is strong demand for natural cosmetics: serums, creams, shampoos, cleansing products, especially those with authentic, heritage-based formulations. Food supplements and wellness products rooted in Balkan botanical traditions align well with current consumer trends across Western Europe. That said, the category matters less than the fundamentals. You need consistent, controllable quality, and ideally a compact product format. Products that fit within the dimensions of a standard shoebox and weigh under two kilograms are ideal for Amazon FBA. They can be stored in Amazon’s European warehouses and fulfilled across the entire network at very reasonable rates. When those conditions are met, the platform becomes an extremely efficient route to market.

What should a Balkan manufacturer consider before deciding to sell on Amazon?

A few things matter most. First, you need control over product quality. You should be the manufacturer, or have direct oversight of what is being produced. Amazon customers leave reviews, and consistency is non-negotiable. Second, you need a realistic understanding that Amazon rewards proper investment: in professional listings, in images, in advertising, and in market-specific localisation. Cutting corners in any of these areas has a direct impact on results. Third, you need patience in the early stage combined with a clear strategy. The brands that succeed on Amazon are those that treat it as a channel they are building for the long term, not as a short-term experiment. That is the mindset we bring to every client from day one.
