Cross-border expansion in CEE is rarely blocked by “lack of demand.” It’s blocked by messy execution: unclear ownership, shallow unit economics, and teams that scale spend before they can scale operations.
Ionuț Radu Munteanu sits exactly at that intersection – strategy and execution. With a background as a founder at WebDigital, plus years of consulting and training work, Ionuț is known for turning complex growth problems into framework teams can actually run week after week.
As a Brand Ambassador for the Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026, Ionuț’s focus is practical: what works, what scales, and what breaks in real operations. In this interview, he shares a 30-day “play” for entering a new market, the KPIs that predict strong growth marketers, what separates performance marketing winners in CEE, and the leadership shift that helped him move from expert-driven execution to repeatable systems.
What is your role as Brand Ambassador, and how will you support the community in 2026?
As Brand Ambassador, my role is to bridge strategy and execution for founders, operators, and growth teams across the region.
I come from a mixed background as a founder at WebDigital, consultant, and trainer, so my focus is practical: what works, what scales, and what breaks in real operations.
In 2026, I plan to support the community through:
- Case-based sessions
- Operator roundtables
- Reusable playbooks teams can implement immediately
I am also actively involved through IAB Romania and CEEDA, with a focus on mentorship, knowledge sharing, and building stronger operational cultures across agencies.
What is a practical 30-day play for cross-border expansion, and what is the main mistake to avoid?
A practical 30-day play is:
- One market
- One hero category
- One acquisition channel
- One clear KPI framework
Week 1: market scan and positioning
Week 2: localization, offer adaptation, meet local knowledge center (aka local marketer)
Week 3: paid testing and creative learning
Week 4: retention and contribution margin validation
The biggest mistake is scaling too early and imagining a “30-day plan” is ever literal.
Teams often optimize for revenue or ROAS before validating contribution margin and operational feasibility, which leads to fragile growth.
Which skills and KPIs predict a strong growth marketer, and how can they be built in a team?
The strongest growth marketers combine:
- Analytical thinking
- Creative testing
- Understanding of unit economics
- Prioritization under constraints
The KPIs that matter most are:
- CAC payback
- Contribution margin
- MER (or blended ROAS) by cohort
- Retention
- Experiment velocity
To build this in a team, structure matters more than talent:
- Shared dashboards
- Weekly experiment reviews
- Clear ownership by funnel stage
I am also developing an eCommerce business simulation model to help marketers and founders understand the trade-offs between marketing, inventory, pricing, and financing decisions.
What separates winners in CEE performance marketing?
The pattern I see is that winners combine speed with discipline.
They test quickly, measure rigorously, build first-party data capabilities, develop strong creative systems, and maintain stable operating cadences.
They optimize for profitable growth, not vanity metrics.
At CEEDA, one strategic direction is helping agencies improve operational maturity through knowledge sharing, case studies, and structured peer learning programs.
What personal turning point shaped how you lead, teach, and build systems?
A major turning point was shifting from doing everything myself to building repeatable systems and empowering operators.
That changed my leadership style from expert-centric to framework-centric.
Today, I focus on:
- Clarity over control
- Accountability over supervision
- Processes that compound over time
This approach influences how I lead teams at WebDigital, how I teach students and founders, and how I contribute to IAB Romania and CEEDA.
